 Branching Out – Nature’s threadwork!

                                       

“My First Landscape” - 5 hour class  -  Saturday, Sept. 24/16    10-3pm

In this class you will  learn the techniques to give you the confidence to create a landscape quilt from a photo.  You have a choice of 2 photos to work from to start your landscape journey.   

“Texture in a Landscape” - 4 hour class – Saturday, November 19/16  

10 – 2pm

There are so many ways to create texture using a variety of fibers

to add depth to your landscape piece.  In this class Susan will show

 you just a few that can make your landscape come to life! 

  

Fabric painting and ice dyeing-  5 hour class    Saturday, October 1/16   10-3pm                          

Learn how to create your own colours and styles using inks, dyes and a variety of fabrics to use in your own quilted landscapes. 

   

Dippity Doo Dye - 4 hour class – 

Saturday, November  26/16   10-2pm            

What a fun and easy class to do using procion dyes to paint with.   Create a small picture in this class that you can stitch and frame for yourself or as a gift for someone special! 

Classes are $150/person plus supplies (in-studio, if you use Susan’s supplies it’s an additional  $15.00/person)

Small Seascapes

What's fun about fibre art you can make it a large piece or a small piece.  I prefer smaller pieces that I like to frame and living here on the West Coast, the ocean is a great inspiration.  I made a series of 3 pieces using a variety of fibres such as organza, hand dyed silk, wool, eyelash yarn,  and cotton balls.

Tsukienko Inks and Cheese cloth painting day!

It's a sunny afternoon and I'm out on the deck and decided it was a great day to ink up some cheese cloth. Cheese cloth creates wonderful texture to any fibre art piece, and you can create such a lovely array of coloured fibres by using a paint brush, water and inks.  Once they are dry, just heat set them with an iron.

Tomorrow it will be Paj silk and inks....so stay tuned!

What's new in my world! Well as you know I'm one to look at what's around me that I can use to give me the feeling that I'm there. Sand added to my piece, 606 and an applique pressing cloth gave me the look I wanted in the first picture known as "To the water". I'm now working on a piece called "Rippington's Farm" which is in Pitt Meadows on Rippington Road. I took a picture back in 2012 and decided this is my next piece.

Merry Christmas!

I thought I would  take a break from wrapping and as I sit here wondering where the time went!  I have so many ideas but didn't but the time just slipped by.  So.....my challenge for 2015 is to take
time even if it is 30 mins. a day  to create something small.

 I was invited to join in a post card exchange and the theme was snowflakes.  Here is the one I did which was shipped off to Idaho!  Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy Healthy Creative 2015!

My "Wabi-Sabi"

As I look for creative ideas on my walks I always find myself taking pictures of old fence posts, broken down barns, rusty gates, rotting tree stumps.  I wasn't sure why, but I always found the beauty in them. Now I know that there is a name for this and  it's called   "Wabi-Sabi"  In Japanese it means  " beauty of things imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete".

Here are some of my photos that I have taken that I would like to do as art piece in and maybe you will see them come to life in a series of fibre art pieces!  Until next time!

"Loon Lake' won Honorable Mention at LaConner Quilt and Fibre Art Festival

I am so pleased to announce that my "Loon Lake" piece won at LaConner Quilt and Fibre Art Festival.  There were so many incredible entries from all over the world.  

As I walked through the show, inspiration took over and now I am going to spread my fibre art wings a little further.  If you like to try making a fibre art piece go for it!  Don't know here to start?  Well, for me it was a picture that inspired me.  I wanted my picture to look like you could walk right into it and walk through the trees.  How would I do that, what techniques had I learned that I could use to make what I see come to life?  It takes time, but the journey is incredible!

Maple Ridge Quilter's Guild Quilt Show

Well, we are running around getting ready for our show this weekend.  I'm in charge of the tearoom!  Don't worry, I'm not cooking so all is safe....!

Right Brain vs Left Brain

The Right Brain

According to the left-brain, right-brain dominance theory, the right side of the brain is best at expressive and creative tasks. Some of the abilities that are popularly associated with the right side of the brain include:

·         Recognizing faces

·         Expressing emotions

·         Music

·         Reading emotions

·         Color

·         Images

·         Intuition

·         Creativity

The Left Brain

The left-side of the brain is considered to be adept at tasks that involve logic, language and analytical thinking. The left-brain is often described as being better at:

·         Language

·         Logic

·         Critical thinking

·         Numbers

·         Reasoning

This is my latest fibre art piece.  I took a picture up at Loon Lake at the UBC Research Forest overlooking the lake.   I hand painted the background onto silk, then continued to build from there trying to get a 3D effect.  I tried to make it into a small quilt, but it just screamed out to be framed under class.  Any comments would be appreciated.

Well it was time that I start showing you what I have been doing in the fibre art world!  I'm part of the most wonderful and inspiring group of women who make me feel that I might just be a fibre artist. (well okay a wanna a be!)

My journey as a quilt pattern designer is a busy one, but when I have time, I love to create fibre art.  I didn't really know that what I was creating was known as fibre art.     I like to dye fabrics, paint threads, paint on silk, hand embroider, felting, mix mediums to name a few, so I guess you get the picture.  My group told me that this was what I was creating.

I'm a firm believer that we all need to work in our right brain to give life balance.  My Dad had a great influence in my life and encourage all of us in the family to be nice, kind, gentle, how to share, to laugh, appreciate the world around us, to never take it for granted and most importantly how to play!  We need to remind ourselves and our children and grandchildren the importance of play and to learn there is more to life than the world of computers, TV, and cellphones! Introduce them to the wonderful world of painting, sewing, woodwork, drawing or colouring!

So here is what I create when I play. Just try it, you will be amazed with what will come out of you!

This was felted with wool roving and eyelash yarn.

This was handpainted, then I did some couching, decorative stitching, used a little angelina and organza, then quilted.

This is rubbing alcohol, sharpie markers, tsukeniko inks, emboridery and quilting.

This is hand dyed silk, decorative stitching, felting, cotton balls, organza and angelina.  Then a fabric frame!
